The Lopez Island Family Resource Center
Lopez Island, Washington

The LIFRC, in Washington state, was formed in 1997, and gives support to approximately 550 families in need of assistance. They supply after-school activities, referral services, and educational support. The goal is to promote community and individual safety, well-being, and the achievement of personal and academic goals. A Resource Technology Lab that offers computers, technical assistance, and training is available to children and adults. It is available for homework, job searches, and the development of life skills.

The Whitney Foundation has awarded a grant to LIFRC to hire a Technology Program Coordinator to further develop their digital media lab, and teach individual and group workshops. Funds have also been made available to bring in a computer technician to maintain the equipment. Two new laptops have been purchased with grant money, in addition to software and hardware upgrades needed to maintain existing computers.

The Whitney Foundation joins the LIFRC in their work to provide a safety net for families in crisis, and help them access community resources with the goal of promoting positive self-sufficiency.

Individual tutoring is available in the technology lab.

The lab is available for Internet access and personal projects during regular business hours.

The technology lab is also a place to learn positive social skills.

Funds have been provided to hire a computer technician to maintain the equipment.
